Fishing

How to fish: your first catch and minigame checks

v1.0.5 data · controls updated in v1.0.4 · checked October 8, 2026

The short answer

Equip a fishing rod, carry fishing bait and cast at a visible fish shadow. React to the bite prompt, then keep the moving bars overlapping until the capture gauge fills. A floating barrel uses the salvage interaction instead.

For a first attempt, unlock the Beginner Fishing Rod (Chillet) and Simple Bait at level 15. Practice at a nearby low-level spot before spending expensive bait on an endgame catch.

Prepare a complete first attempt

Craft the Chillet rod at a High Quality Workbench: 10 Paldium Fragments, 3 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 8 Ingots and 8 Fiber. Put the finished rod in an equipment slot. Bait is a separate consumable; crafting a rod does not provide a stack of bait.

A Simple Bait batch needs 2 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 4 Red Berries and 2 Flour and produces 10. Aquatic Pal Fluids are the named ingredient, not ordinary Pal Fluids. Keep room for the catch and additional items.

Cast, respond and keep the bars together

  1. Approach water with an actual fish shadow. Aim the cast at that spot rather than an empty patch of water.
  2. Read the displayed equipment recommendation and bite/control prompt. Use the input shown for your platform; keyboard and controller icons differ.
  3. When the minigame starts, hold or release the indicated control to move your bar toward the fish bar. Correct in short intervals instead of holding continuously after it changes direction.
  4. Watch the capture gauge: overlap builds progress, separation loses it. Finish the gauge and confirm the catch/reward display before planning another cast.
  5. If you fail, change the cause of the failure before repeating: equipment, party support, control timing or spot difficulty.

No bite is a different problem from losing the gauge

No fishing interaction or bite
Check rod equipped, bait available, cast position and an active fish shadow. A barrel requires salvage tools; more fishing bait will not solve that interaction.
The gauge drains whenever the fish moves
Practice on an easier spot, consider a stronger rod and put Gloopie in your fishing party to reduce progress loss.
Old instructions show different prompts
v1.0.4 added control, warning and recommended-equipment displays, plus a Fish Behavior During Fishing Minigames world setting. Compare the actual save/settings before following a pre-update difficulty claim.

For hands-off catches, use a base Fishing Pond with a Handiwork worker. That is a production task, so you do not perform this bar-control minigame at the pond.
