Pal Souls: when to upgrade, costs and reset refunds

v1.0.5 source check · October 8, 2026

The short answer

You do not need to wait for max level before spending Pal Souls. The October Steam discussion explains that the percentage bonus follows the Pal’s current level and stats. Upgrading earlier gives you the benefit while leveling; it does not lock in a smaller final bonus.

Use a Statue of Power to enhance the Pal. A paid reset returns its spent Souls, but resets all four enhanced stats together. Check the Gold price before confirming.

Upgrade the Pal you are using now

In the October 5–6 When to Pal Soul My Pals? discussion, Irene and Shakja describe a percentage bonus that recalculates with the Pal’s stats. Shakja’s reply #9 explicitly compares spending at level 1 with spending at the final level: the final bonus is the same, while strength during leveling differs.

Choose based on usefulness now and the Gold you could later spend on a reset. For a Pal you expect to keep in your combat party, earlier enhancement helps during that climb. For a temporary Pal you plan to replace soon, reserving Souls can avoid a reset fee. That is a resource-planning recommendation, not a tested optimal build.

Compare the same Pal at the same level and enhancement level when checking the result. A larger absolute gain on a high-level Pal does not mean early enhancement was permanently weaker. These reports describe ordinary Soul enhancement, not breeding values, condensation or every passive interaction.

Use the Pal enhancement menu at the statue

  1. Bring the Pal you want to enhance and the Souls required for its next enhancement to a Statue of Power.
  2. Open the Pal enhancement option and select that Pal. If the screen asks for Effigies to enhance you, switch menus.
  3. Choose Health, Attack, Defense or Work Speed. Read the next Soul size and quantity before confirming.
  4. Apply an enhancement, then check that the selected stat’s enhancement level and percentage increased and the required Souls were deducted.
  5. Repeat for the stats you actually need. Work Speed is useful for the Pal’s work role; it is not an instruction to maximize every stat on every Pal.

Budget by enhancement level, not Pal level

The Pal Enhancement reference lists 20 levels per stat. Each level adds 3 percentage points, reaching +60% at level 20. The “level” in the following table means that stat’s enhancement level, not the Pal’s experience level.

Soul budget for one stat
Enhancement levelsSoul typePer-level quantitiesTier totalBonus at tier end
1–4Small1, 2, 3, 410+12%
5–7Medium1, 2, 36+21%
8–10Large1, 2, 36+30%
11–20Giant1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 430+60%

One fully enhanced stat costs 52 Souls: 10 Small, 6 Medium, 6 Large and 30 Giant. All four stats cost 208: 40 Small, 24 Medium, 24 Large and 120 Giant. Those are resource totals, not a requirement to spend all of them at once.

If you run out, read the exact next tier on the statue rather than counting all Soul sizes as interchangeable. Salvage is one possible source, but rewards vary; a successful pull does not guarantee the Soul size you need.

Reset the whole Pal and recover its Souls

  1. Open the Pal upgrade menu at the Statue of Power and select the previously enhanced Pal.
  2. Use Reset. Read the selected Pal and total Gold cost in the confirmation before accepting.
  3. Confirm only if you want to remove all of its Soul enhancements. You cannot refund just Attack while keeping the other three.
  4. Check that its enhancement levels returned to their starting state and the used Souls returned to your inventory.
  5. Reassign those Souls to your replacement Pal or rebuild the original Pal’s enhancements.

The refund is of the Souls; the reset itself spends Gold. Do not interpret “refund” as a free reset or a refund of that fee. The October Steam replies #4 and #6 corroborate the reset button and Soul return.

The reference’s per-level Gold table has a value that does not match a simple progression calculation. This guide therefore uses the confirmation price shown for your Pal rather than a predicted fee. The reset is a respec of enhancements, not character recovery, a change to genes or a reversal of condensation.

Souls and Effigies use different statue options

Souls enhance a selected Pal’s Health, Attack, Defense and Work Speed. Pal Effigies are offerings for player enhancements at the same statue. Finding the same building does not make the currencies or menus interchangeable.

  • Spending Souls: select the Pal enhancement option, then the Pal and stat.
  • Spending an Effigy: select the player enhancement option and read which player ability that Effigy changes.
  • Changing a Pal’s rank: condensation is a separate system; this page’s reset instructions concern Soul enhancement.

If you have the wrong resource for the screen, change the selected action. Do not reset a Pal in an attempt to retrieve player Effigies.

If holding the upgrade control does not work

The official v1.0.4 notes state that hold input for Pal Soul enhancement was fixed. If that is the exact symptom, check your installed client and the server’s version before treating an older report as a current workaround.

If the current version still fails, verify the selected Pal, the next Soul tier and the displayed cost. Record the platform, client/server versions and whether a single confirmation works when reporting it through Pocketpair’s game support form. This is a diagnostic sequence; the patch note does not prove every controller or mod combination works.
