Fishing shadows: green sparkles, purple sparkles and Lunker geysers

PalDB v1.0.5 · August 1 fishing question · reviewed October 8, 2026

The short answer

Green sparkles indicate a guaranteed Rainbow passive; purple sparkles indicate an Alpha Pal; a purple geyser indicates Lunker. Look at the shape of the effect as well as its color. A purple sparkle and an upward purple plume do not make the same promise.

Choose the shadow for the result you want, then inspect the caught Pal. “Rainbow” is a category, not a guarantee of the specific passive you are seeking.

This table keeps the current reference’s three descriptions separate. It does not rank every purple spot above every green spot, specify trait odds, or claim that colors guarantee all combinations of Alpha and passives.

Choose, catch and verify the Pal

  1. Decide whether your immediate goal is a Rainbow candidate, an Alpha, or Lunker.
  2. Look at an available fish shadow from a position where you can fish. Identify sparkles versus a rising geyser before casting.
  3. Check that your rod and bait fit the shadow. A desired visual effect does not remove equipment requirements.
  4. Complete the fishing minigame and collect the catch.
  5. Open the caught Pal’s details. Check its Alpha status and the actual passive names; retain the candidate that matches your goal.

If you are losing the minigame, improve the equipment or party bonus that addresses the loss. Changing to a different color does not repair a rod-size mismatch or control problem.

Why repeated green catches can give unwanted passives

Giamborghini’s August 1 question asks whether Diamond Body and Demon God can appear everywhere, because early green spots keep producing the same traits. Embarrassed-Back-295 replies that ordinary Rainbow fishing and special World Tree passives are different pools. FirstTheEighthPillar recommends purple beams and describes location as affecting the catch species and level.

Those replies establish the player’s selection problem, not a complete current probability table. A green catch satisfying the Rainbow-category description can still have a passive you do not want. Repeated traits alone do not prove that the spot is bugged or that a chosen trait is guaranteed after a particular number of attempts.

Use green sparkles to collect candidates, then evaluate the actual result. We have not verified an exhaustive location-by-passive pool, so this guide does not promise that any named Rainbow passive, especially a World Tree-specific one, can be fished anywhere.

Choose location for the rest of your task

Once you know which effect fits, choose a fishing route based on your equipment, target species or additional resource goal. This avoids traveling to the hardest water solely because a discussion calls purple “better.”

If you also need manuals or Holy Water, check that the selected region’s reward pool includes them. Pal traits and item loot are different reasons for choosing a catch; a rare-looking shadow alone is not a guarantee of the book or material you need.

Keep the caught Pal’s identity and passive details when comparing outcomes. We do not turn a screenshot of one impressive catch into an hourly farming rate or an optimal breeding plan.

Resolve the common mismatches

“I picked purple but got no Lunker.”
Check whether you selected small purple sparkles rather than a purple geyser. The current reference gives them different meanings.
“Green gave Rainbow, but not my chosen passive.”
The category result met the stated condition. A specific skill was not promised; inspect the candidate before keeping or replacing it.
“My fishing party gave more loot but not better traits.”
Item quantity and passive selection are separate. Use the party guide for the demonstrated skill effect rather than inferring a trait guarantee.
“The old guide gives different rewards or difficulty.”
Check the installed game version. v1.0.4 adjusted Sunreach/World Tree difficulty and bait rewards; use current equipment prompts and data.
